Surfer Dude

Yep! That's what we're going to call Bruce! Fits right in, doesn't he?

Today, he and Russ went surfing at Double Island Point near Rainbow Beach. It is touted as great beginner surf waves and, yes, they are beginners. They both took a surf lesson in Hawaii and one of them (cough...Bruce....cough) was a bit more successful than the other, but they both wanted to at least say they surfed in Australia.

So off they go! Across on the ferry........then an hour ride on barely padded seats in a very rugged 4 wheel drive, uncomfortable vehicle.......THEN a kilometer walk carrying surfboards, uphill both ways. To be fair, it was a pretty gruesome trek, BUT you have the sea on one side of you and the mountains on the other, so really, how bad could it really have been. This is all hearsay, of course, because Dora and I couldn't go to support.

There are no pics because, well, because they were surfing, so we have to take their word for all of this. Again, one of them (cough.....Bruce......cough) was more successful than the other. Russ got up this time, although I was told you couldn't blink if you wanted to see it. On his last 2 tries, Bruce successfully caught waves all by himself! He surfed Australia!

On their reverse gruesome trip back to civilization, the guides were able to point out several things. Like Bruce. No, not mine. There is a Bruce, the seagull with a wingspan of about 7 feet! And then there was this guy, who looks a bit spooky to me.
