Most of the time when we have travel days we are able to break them up with a little somethin' somethin'. Today's somethin' was the Bundaberg Rum Distillery. You've never heard of it, you say? Probably because they don't sell it in the US.
We first heard of it when we walked into Costco and they were selling Bundaberg Ginger Beer by the case. This was months ago, and knowing we were going to Australia, and seeing Australia on the box, we bought it. It's very good ginger beer which I highly recommend if you like Dark & Stormies. Bruce investigated further and saw that we would be very near the distillery. Well, let's go!
You go through a little museum first to acquaint yourself with how the company came about.
You'll have to take my word for the tour part. We couldn't take any cameras into the factory. In fact, we couldn't take anything that had batteries, so we even had to take off our watches. Just know that we saw a huge amount of molasses in their reservoirs, the fermentation vats, the distillation process and finally the barrels where it is aged.
THEN we got to the good part!
The tasting! We each got two samples either straight or you could have it mixed with your choice. For example, I had a Dark & Stormy with their black rum.
All in all, I'd say it was a good little break from the driving!
