However, it is within walking distance of public transportation. Here in Sydney you buy an Opal card. This is a metro card that allows you entry to buses, trains and ferries. So we bought our Opal card and set off to scope things out. We will be doing things like taking a tour of the Opera House when we come back.
One thing on our list though was to go to the Fortune of War Pub. It claims that it is the oldest pub in Sydney (a claim that 2 other pubs make also; so there's that....). It kind of has a Cheers feel. There was a guy sitting in the corner named Sonny that everyone seemed to know.
We began our day today by going to Cocktoo Island by ferry.
Contrary to its name (cough....Kelli.....), we didn't see a single cockatoo there. Not. One. It got its name when the British first found it there were flocks of the birds. Were, being the operative word here. That was back in the 1700's! The established the island for the incarceration of the worst of the worst criminals. Today, you can "glamp" there and lay claim to having camped at the only place one can do so in Sydney Harbour.
You can see where the prisoners lived, what they did, where they eat, etc, but no cockatoos.
On to the next place! Manly Beach. Another ferry ride away and not only is there a really nice beach, but a whole cute little town. It's supposed to be good snorkeling and we'll find out on the next go round.
There's a nice path that takes you on a walk along the beach. We ran into these guys - water dragons.
Not done yet though! Tonight we took a walking tour of an area called The Rocks. It was an informative tour that told us of the history of this area. The Rocks was associated with not only criminals back in the day (again with criminals here hmmm), but also sailors and the like. It's right by the wharf. Since it was a night tour, we got some awesome pics of landmarks all lit up.
We'll be back!
